Painting Demo - Blog Carnival

A Blog Carnival consist of different Artists All Blogging about the same subject.
Be sure to checkout the list of talented Artists below!

DEMO
How does a painting start?  First there is the inspiration, and then the research.
Next a few thumbnail sketches for design and placement.

My block-in is done with thinned down water soluble oil paints.
This is the last time I use a brush for this painting because all the rest was done with a palette knife.

I started the painting with a mixture of darks, mixing my own black from a pre-made green, adding more Ultramarine Blue and then a touch of Cad. Red.  This mixture was put in as a background for the chicken with some places being painted all green or all blue.  I knew by putting the darks in first, the lighter feathers would show.

For the feathers I used a mix of Yellow Ochre and white.
As I applied the white oil paint with a palette knife, I pulled and pushed to make the feathers, picking up the dark color into the light mixture.

    1. Cathy, Thank You! The tail was were I could really use my knife. I need to paint larger so I can use my arm more than just my fingers. I learn something new with every painting!

  5. You did a great job on this guy. I like the blog carnival idea. It might be fun to have all of the artist share a painting demo of the same subject matter. Since some paint in watercolor and some with the knife or brush. It would be interesting to see how each artist approaches the same subject. I will be keeping up with this group of talent for a long time. I loved each one. 2014 I plan a Rooster painting for my Mom and hope that it comes out as good as yours. I might even throw down those brushes for the knife now that I have seen yours. Great job!

  6. not sure how you keep the colors so pure with the dark under painting, but love it. Maybe it's a knife thing, I'll have to give that a try - how inspiring!

    1. Yes, paint application is done with a painting knife and the under painting is wet. It was All painted in one session. I have been on the road traveling, that is why I didn't answer you right away. Thank You for commenting!
